ადამიანის თვალი არის სფერული ფორმის, იგი შედგება სამი გარსისგან: ფიბროზული, სისხლძარღოვანი და ბადურა გარსისგან.
ფიბროზული გარსი შედგება რქოვანისა (რომელიც წარმოადგენს გამჭვირვალე ელიფსოიდური ფორმის სინათლის გამტარ ნაწილს) და სკლერისგან (რომელიც არის გაუმჭვირვალე და წარმოადგენს ფიბროზული გარსის დანარჩენ ნაწილს).
სისხლძარღვოვანი გარსი შედგება: ფერადი გარსის, ცილიარული სხეულის და ქორიოიდეისაგან. თვალის ფერი დამოკიდებულია ფერად გარსში პიგმენტის რაოდენობაზე. ფერადი გარსის ცენტრში არის მრგვალი ფორმის ხვრელი – გუგა, რომელიც სინათლეზე რეაგირებს. (კაშკაშა სინათლეზე – ვიწროვდება და სიბნელეში ფართოვდება)
რქოვანასა და ფერად გარსს შორის სივრცეს წინა საკანი ეწოდება. ცილიარული სხეულიგამოიმუშავებს თვალშიდა სითხეს,რომელიც ცირკულირებს თვალში და ანხორციელებს რქოვანას,ბროლისა და მინისებრი სხეულის კვებას.
ქორიოიდეა წარმოადგენს სისხლძარღვოვანი გარსის უკანა ნაწილს, რომელიც უშუალო კავშირშია ბადურა გარსთან და მის კვებაში მონაწილეობს. თვალში არსებობს წინა და უკანა საკანი. თვალის კაკლის შიგთავს წარმოადგენს თვალშიდა სითხე, ბროლი, მინისებური სხეული. ბროლი წარმოადგენს ორმხრივად ამოზნექილ ლინზას, რომელიც გარდატეხს სინათლის სხივს და აფოკუსირებს გამოსახულებას ბადურა გარსზე. მინისებური სხეულიარის ჟელესებური ნივთიერება, რომელიც ავსებს თვალის უკანა ნაწილს. ბადურა გარსიმდებარეობს მინისებური სხეულის უკან და მიფენილია ქორიოიდეაზე. ბადურა გარსის ცენტრალურ ნაწილს ეწოდება ყვითელი ხალი (მაკულა). იგი უზრუნველყოფს ცენტრალურ მხედველობას. ბადურაზე ხდება სინათლის სხივის ფოკუსირება, აქ ისინი გარდაიქმნებიან ნერვულ იმპულსებად და მხედველობის ნერვის საშუალებით გადაეცემა თავის ტვინს.
თვალის ყველა ნაწილის შეთანხმებული მუშაობა გვაძლევს საშუალებას დავინახოთ როგორც შორს, ისე ახლო მანძილზე; დღისით და ღამით, აღვიქვათ ფერთა მრავალფეროვნება და ვორიენტირდეთ სივრცეში.
